Also because what comes after is part of the duties of the President of the Republic, who in a press release issued yesterday evening, ensured that he wants to listen with the utmost attention the proposals of every political force, "from the ruling coalition that emerged from the 2008 elections as well as from the opposition". All political forces, that all have the same legitimacy.

The reference to the 2008 elections implies that the head of State will not accredit governments that overturn the balance of the two-party system. In other words no "reversal" according to a controversial theme that is so dear to the center-right (that sometimes almost gives the impression of hoping for a sudden change in parliament, in order to have a wonderful subject matter to use during the electoral campaign). At the same time, the President of the Republic did not give up on any of his prerogatives and will do everything possible to check if in Parliament there is a majority, which is broad, cross-party and stable, for Europe. A majority that the European Union would surely like and that would have positive effects on the spread of Treasury bonds, especially if it were headed by someone of great international prestige.

If this were not possible, all political forces will have to admit their own responsibilities when the political puzzle will be put together by resorting to snap elections; in the hope that the European context will make everyone limit the tones and the rate of populism. The important thing is that the game is played with transparent rules. The Head of State offers everyone the utmost guarantees, but in exchange he asks for the same type of correct behavior. Berlusconi, Bersani as well as the other main characters of the political scene know that they have to come out of minor roles and a merely provincial horizon. We are at the collective final exam. Everyone will face original problems.

The Prime Minister, for example, will have to live with a new phase, therefore also with new defections from the PDL and a real landslide of senators and members of the House who want to avoid elections. It is the consequence of the end of an era. It is a matter of managing the situation in a serious way, without ever losing sight of the only realistic perspective: there is a country to save with courage and, for once, selflessness.

In the same way Bersani will have to lay on the table the popular strength of the PD without being overly conditioned by people like Vendola or Di Pietro and on the background by the followers of Beppe Grillo. The PD could lose some consensus, but it will gain instead its culture of government. And Casini's and Fini's "third pole" will have to think about sending a clear message to Italians, not only of winning the game in "politics". Maybe we can reach elections in a short period of time, but it is essential that the challenge is not destructive. Italy could not sustain that.
